Chapter 93 : A Chance for Atonement

Strange.

The floor beneath her was no longer cold. She was lying on a soft blanket.

Just like now.

Her fingers unconsciously traced the edge of the blanket, the soft fur feeling familiar.

It wasn’t a fond memory. Except for the time she had watched the stars with Tifna, wrapped in a blanket, every other time it had appeared was tied to the memory of being thrown into the iron cage, and the unbearable experiences that followed.

All bad memories.

A bitter smile. Even so, her fingers gripped the blanket tighter, as if afraid it would disappear.

She had been lying on the cold floor for days. This morning, she had woken up to warmth, not cold. It was as if she were still in a dream.

A fragile dream, that could be shattered by the slightest touch.

She had had such dreams before.

When she opened her eyes and saw only darkness, she knew it wasn’t a dream.

Yesterday, when she had been pulled from the holy water pool, her vision had gone completely black. The damage to her eyes had far exceeded her body’s healing ability.

If the seal wasn’t broken, she would be trapped in darkness forever.

Strangely, besides her eyes, the other parts of her body that had been corroded by the holy water had healed. The pain from last night was gone.

Was it because the damage to her eyes was so severe?

No… she thought of another possibility.

The person who had wrapped her in a blanket last night had probably done more than just that. Her wounds were likely healed by them as well.

For some reason, only her eyes were left untreated. Was it deliberate, or was the damage so severe that even healing magic couldn’t help?

A bitter feeling. No matter what, she had to thank the mysterious person from last night.

When she woke up, her throat wasn’t as dry as the past few days. A sweet taste lingered on her lips. They had quenched her thirst. There was no reason to deliberately leave her eyes untreated.

From the current situation, Milly could deduce the person’s identity.

To be able to enter the dungeon, give her water and a blanket, and use healing magic. Either they had a special status that allowed them to dismiss the guards, or they were strong enough to take them down.

But with her eyes damaged, she couldn’t confirm.

Among the people she knew, there were those who fit the criteria, but they had no reason to help her.

Whether it was the noble Saintess Lillian, or the powerful Tifna, they had no reason to help a demon, the most hated race of humans.

What were they after?

If not them, then there was only one other possibility.

Stacy…

That woman?

Healing her, giving her water, and wrapping her in a blanket.

Could she be so gentle?

Even knowing she was asleep, she still…

What did she want?

And if she was still alive, why didn’t she just take her away?

That paranoid woman had always wanted to keep her locked up, obedient.

She had a chance to take her away last night, but she didn’t.

Was she worried about something? Or was she planning something?

Milly didn’t know. And all these guesses were based on the assumption that Stacy was still alive.

She was a Fell God, the final boss. Milly didn’t want to believe she could die so anticlimactically.

She had left her in the Church so she could figure out the connection between the Church and leaving this world. But couldn’t she just disguise herself and sneak in? It would be much easier.

She couldn’t figure it out. If Stacy was still alive, what was she planning?

The blanket around her suddenly disappeared. Her body was once again exposed to the cold floor.

At the same time, a guard’s voice came from outside the cage.

“Strange, how did I fall asleep? The prisoner, right, I have to check on the prisoner!”

The sound of clanking armor. The guard seemed relieved to find her still in the cage.

“Stay put. If you don’t want to suffer, don’t even think about escaping.”

She was in this state. If she could still escape, the guard might as well kill himself.

The footsteps faded.

Was he changing shifts already? And wasn’t he supposed to be on watch? Someone had been watching her for three days straight.

The guard falling asleep must have been the work of that person from last night.

Forced entry, a blanket, and then making sure no one would find out.

There was only one person who could do that.

What did she want?

At the dungeon gate, the two guards were waking up.

They had completely forgotten what had happened last night, only wondering why they had suddenly fallen asleep at home.

Hearing the footsteps from inside, they knew the Platinum Knight was leaving. They quickly stood up straight, putting on a serious face.

After all, if this lord knew they had fallen asleep on watch, they would surely be punished.

The Platinum Knight just glanced at them and left.

He went straight to Oswell’s study. He had to ask for his next assignment.

As one of the few remaining Platinum Knights, being assigned to guard a weak, powerless demon was a waste of his talents. Any ordinary guard could do it.

When he entered, someone was already there.

He recognized her. The sister of the Sword Saint Agnes, the only survivor of the crusade besides the Pope and the Saintess.

A look of surprise on Tifna’s face.

“If she is successfully purified, she can be reverted from a demon to a human?”

“It is the Goddess’s grace. Even though the Sword Saint betrayed the Goddess and became the Fell God’s dog, the Goddess is still willing to give her a chance for atonement.”

The surprise on Tifna’s face faded. The conversation with Milly that night, she had understood everything.

“And the Pope has pointed out that if she is reverted to a human, there is a chance to find the consciousness hidden within that body.”

“If that is done, then Mil… that demon’s consciousness, what will happen to her?”
