X
The morning of the third day.
Milly slowly opened her eyes.
Since her eyes began to heal, her vision had grown clearer each day.
The blurry text had sharpened as well, though she still couldn’t make it out.
Perhaps when her sight fully returned, she would be able to read them.
She wondered how much she had recovered today.
Something was off.
Her vision was almost too clear, even clearer than before she was injured.
She looked up.
Every strand of the spiderweb in the corner was visible.
‘When did my eyesight become so good?’
Milly whispered to herself, “Is my vision fully restored?”
‘If my vision is restored, and my theory is correct… then I should be able to read those blurry words now.’
She instinctively looked at the blanket wrapped around her.
This was one of the things that had blurry text.
If she was right, she should be able to decipher the translucent words floating above it.
She was right.
The translucent text was clear.
But what she read made her frown.
[Item: Church Special Wool Blanket]
[Properties: Excellent Warmth]
[User: ???]
‘What the hell is this?’
Milly rubbed her eyes, as if that would change the words.
When she stopped, the text remained the same.
She was sure now.
This was what the blurry text had said all along.
‘So, I have an appraisal skill now?’
‘But what do the three glaring question marks after ‘user’ mean?’
‘If it’s an appraisal skill, don’t give me a half-assed effect.’
‘What kind of appraisal only identifies half the information?’
‘Calm down, calm down… It’s just a blanket. There’s nothing more to it. Let’s see what else I can find.’
She looked at the cage. It also had translucent text.
The words on the iron bars became clear.
[Dungeon Cell]… [Repaired]. The rest was just the material.
Reading the text, she realized it was all useless information.
She could use her breathing technique to find the cage’s weak points, but her powers were sealed.
So, for now, this appraisal skill was useless. It couldn’t help her break the seal, couldn’t enhance her combat ability, and couldn’t help her kill the old fool who had sealed her powers.
‘I finally get a new skill, and it’s this?’
She stared at the text on the cage, almost cursing.
She was in a life-or-death situation, and her new ability was to see item properties?
Damn it.
She punched the cage in frustration. Her elbow throbbed.
A few more lines of translucent text appeared.
[Minor Bruise on Hand]
[Self-healing Ineffective (Sealed)]
[Elbow Strength < Cage]
‘This…’
She stared at the text, almost fainting from anger.
‘I know all that! I know my powers are sealed, that my healing is ineffective.’
‘And the third line? What does it mean, my elbow is weaker than the cage? Is it mocking me?’
‘I was venting, damn it. Does it think I don’t know I’m a weak, helpless girl?’
She almost couldn’t breathe. This ability was not only useless, but it also made her angry.
‘Can I exchange it? Pyrokinesis, hydrokinesis, invisibility, X-ray vision, teleportation—anything would do.’
‘Just not this.’
Just then, the blanket under her disappeared. Had the noise woken the guard?
She looked outside. The blurry text around the awakened guard was now clear.
[Name: Xavier Claude (?)]
[Position: Platinum Knight]
[Personality: Irritable and Angry]
[Status: Abnormal]
Wait, the name had a question mark? Was it a fake name, or was the person outside not really Xavier?
And his status was abnormal.
Milly thought for a moment. The day her eyes were damaged, she had heard someone call her a whelp. Tifna had been there. But because she was blind, she hadn’t seen who it was.
The cursing hadn’t lasted long. She had smelled blood, and a familiar scent. Both had quickly faded.
The text beside Xavier… it was probably him who had cursed her. As for the abnormal status, besides the obvious “dazed,” it could be “parasitized,” “controlled,” etc.
She just had to listen to him. If his first words were to curse her, it was him. If not, then he had been replaced.
Xavier just glanced at her and left.
‘Replaced?’
‘Couldn’t the appraisal skill just say that? Why the question mark?’
‘Useless.’
She looked at the floor. She summoned the book sigil first.
[Item: ?? Log]
[Usage Permission Missing]
The rest was garbled.
‘I can play the memory fragments in my head, but I don’t have permission to use it?’
‘Do I have to dig up Stacy and get her permission?’
‘And this is another world. The word “permission” feels so out of place.’
‘This is useless. Even the first two words of the log are question marks. This appraisal skill is a joke. One look and it goes silent.’
One last thing. She looked at the cold floor. The text that appeared made her pause.
[Trace: Minute Bloodstain (Source Unknown)]
[Abnormal Sound from Below the Floor]
For the first time, two separate pieces of information.
Bloodstains and something under the floor.
The bloodstains could be hers. As for under the floor, she had knocked. She hadn’t heard anything.
Maybe it was her problem.
While Xavier was gone and no one was watching, she lay on the floor and knocked again, listening intently.
But she still couldn’t hear anything.
Was it the skill, or her?
She didn’t know. Besides these few things, she couldn’t find any other text.
She would just have to wait for someone to come and take her away. She could use her useless appraisal skill to check on them.
But she waited all day, and no one came. It was as if she had been forgotten.
