With her fingertips tightly pressing against the hilt of the sword at her waist, Candice stared intently at Milly on the other side.
Although she didn’t mention Milly directly, Milly could clearly read her sharp gaze and tell what she wanted to say.
After all, not to mention that she, an outsider, had appeared in the Saintess’s private room.
But the usually dignified and holy Saintess was now not only dressed in a disheveled manner, but her face also carried an unnatural blush.
Anyone would direct the brunt of their suspicion straight at Milly.
Milly spread her hands helplessly; she had already grown accustomed to this, although whether that girl would believe her if she explained was a different matter.
Although she possessed the exact same face as Tifna, like a recycled game asset model, the difference between the two of them was still quite massive.
Ever since they parted ways on the day of the judgment, she had never heard any news about Tifna, and she didn’t know how she was doing now.
Now, looking at this knight girl with the identical face, Milly found herself unable to treat her as that old friend.
She should probably speak up first to clarify her situation, to show that Stacy being in this state had nothing to do with her…
Wait, strictly speaking, it actually was because of her teasing.
So it actually was her fault.
This was going to be hard to resolve.
Before Milly could open her mouth, Stacy, noticing the somewhat off atmosphere, grabbed Candice’s hand that was resting on her sword hilt.
“I’m fine. A small accident happened this morning.”
“Of course, it was mostly my own fault, and it has nothing to do with Milly.”
Was it really appropriate to put it that way?
And when matched with Stacy’s flustered tone, didn’t this directly point the finger at Milly, making it seem entirely like Milly’s fault?
This idiot Saintess… how on earth did she eventually become that Stacy?
Milly couldn’t help but rub her forehead.
Yet, unexpectedly, Candice actually released her grip on the sword hilt and gave a knightly salute in Milly’s direction.
“My apologies, Lord Hero. I have been impolite.”
Hmm?
Wasn’t there something a bit off about this title?
Milly still clearly remembered that this girl, Candice, had harbored clear hostility toward her last night. Why was she suddenly calling her “Hero” now?
However, Candice didn’t add anything after delivering her knight’s salute.
It was probably because her search for the demons yesterday had changed her attitude.
Her gaze shifted back to Stacy. “Your Holiness, the others are already waiting outside the sanctuary.”
“The sanctuary?”
Stacy tilted her head in slight confusion.
After summoning the hero yesterday, there shouldn’t be any important matters requiring the sanctuary, right?
But now, with no one presiding over the sanctuary’s duties, what was going on?
Seeing the confusion flashing in Stacy’s eyes, Candice instinctively lowered her brow. This really didn’t look like the Saintess she knew; she shouldn’t be making such a low-level mistake as forgetting.
“Have you forgotten? You were the one who ordered it yesterday, saying we would gather the candidates for the Demon King subjugation squad in the sanctuary today.”
“Eh?”
Stacy clapped her hands together abruptly. Indeed, there was such a matter.
And last night, she had even sent a nun to inform each of the candidates she had carefully selected. How could she have forgotten such an important thing?
Was it because her mind had been in such a mess, thinking about so many unspeakable things, that she had forgotten this crucial matter?
Ugh… how could she be like this? Having her mind wander and causing trouble for Milly was one thing, but it had actually caused her, the Saintess, to slip up.
She really had to find a way to purify this filthy mind of hers.
However, looking back at Milly, just simply staring at her caused those shameful scenes to uncontrollably resurface in her mind.
Furthermore, the version of herself in those scenes looked so unfamiliar.
She couldn’t see a single trace of the grace a Saintess should possess; she looked more like a wild pervert…
No, no, no… her thoughts were drifting again. What should she do? Her mind felt more and more chaotic.
Looking up, Milly gave Stacy a smile.
It had taken so much effort to force herself to calm down, yet her thoughts were in a complete mess once again. If Candice weren’t still standing here, Stacy, whose eyes were almost spinning in dizzy spirals, would have already had the urge to flee.
What a total failure. It was one thing to neglect her duties as the Saintess, but she actually kept fantasizing about those shameful scenes.
Those scenes…
Ugh… once all of this was over, she absolutely had to go to the Confession Chamber to pray to the Goddess, begging the Goddess to forgive these sins of hers.
Taking a deep breath, Stacy gradually calmed down. There were far more important matters ahead; she can’t continue letting her thoughts run wild.
“I’m sorry. A few matters have distracted my thoughts, and I lost my composure just now.”
“A few matters…”
Candice glanced at Milly, who had appeared in the room, and then at Stacy, whose cheeks were still flushed with a lingering blush.
Combining her words about “a few matters distracting her thoughts” with her previous flustered and panicked appearance, Candice could roughly guess what had transpired in this room last night.
She truly hadn’t expected the Saintess to take that step as well. However, as her guard, Candice wouldn’t say anything more; she would only offer her a gentle reminder.
“Your Holiness, please take care of your health from now on.”
Hmm?
Did Milly hear something wrong? Put in this current context, didn’t those words sound a bit strange?
Stacy didn’t understand what Candice was talking about at first, but when she finally processed it, her face turned red at a visible rate.
“C-Candice, it’s a misunderstanding… this really is a misunderstanding.”
“…Between us… last night, really nothing happened.”
Coupled with her incoherent speech and her crimson face, why did she feel like she was only making it worse?
In the end, Candice merely wore an expression that said she understood completely.
‘Her Holiness has been under a lot of pressure lately, so it’s perfectly normal to need an outlet. However, I hope Her Holiness minds her health in the future.’
“No… no… that’s not it, you’ve misunderstood, really nothing happened.”
“Yes… I understand. It’s alright, Your Holiness. I understand it all.”
“Really nothing happened…”
Stacy looked like she was about to cry. She had never noticed it before, but when did Candice’s imagination become so active?
It was over. No matter how she explained it now, Candice seemed entirely set on her own theory.
But she had to at least grab Candice and make one last attempt, to explain to her one more time that it really was just a misunderstanding.
However, before Stacy could grab her, Candice simply left a sentence saying she was going to secure the sanctuary, turned around, and walked right out of the room, leaving Stacy standing there completely dumbfounded.
Standing to the side, Milly had watched the entire process. At first, she thought Candice was coming for her, but in the end, what kind of farce was this?
However, another point of concern was Candice’s attitude toward her. Had it suddenly changed?
Originally, seeing her in Stacy’s room, she should have shown a certain amount of rejection.
But after Stacy clarified that it wasn’t Milly’s fault, but Stacy’s own, Candice’s attitude had shifted. Not only did she address her as “Lord Hero,” but she also didn’t say much even after “confirming” the relationship between her and Stacy, merely telling Stacy to take care of her health.
Was she of this attitude toward her yesterday? The change was a bit strange. Was it because she had searched all over the city for demons yesterday?
Milly wasn’t sure. But relatively speaking, a change in attitude was a good thing.
Alright, she would tidy up and head to the sanctuary to meet the squad members Stacy had prepared for her.
But before she went…
She glanced at Stacy, who was still standing in place and muttering something to herself.
Ugh… it was over. This girl seemed to be turning abnormal because her image as a Saintess had completely collapsed.
