Join the ServerEven on her second visit, Eileen was utterly awestruck by this place.
Wide streets stretched before her, lined with shops overflowing with dazzling jewels. Were it not for the prominent tails and wings adorning their inhabitants, Eileen might not have discerned whether she stood in a human city or a Dragonfolk one.
The moment they stepped into the city, two Dragonfolk, appearing to be servants, approached them.
“Lady Faltis Calibot.”
“Lady Eileen Calibot.”
Taking the luggage from Eileen, they invited, “Please, follow us.”
Eileen and Faltis followed their guidance to an inn. “May I ask, ladies, will one room suffice, just as before?”
Faltis nodded. The two servants then escorted Eileen and Faltis to the inn’s uppermost floor, which offered a splendid panorama, revealing a vast expanse of the Sky-Colored Fantasy Isle.
Such accommodations were not accessible to just anyone.
Eileen stood by the window, gazing at a colossal ancient tree in the distance.
Within this ancient tree, the impending meeting was to be held.
Eileen had once posed a question to Faltis regarding the ancient tree’s age. Faltis had replied, “No one truly knows the lifespan of this Tree of Origins. All records of it vanished long ago in the river of time.
“However, the most common belief now is that the first Dragonfolk was born beneath its branches.”
This profound history explained why the Dragonfolk revered this place as the Dream Isle, considering it a sacred land.
The Dragonfolk residing here were predominantly venerable elders and mighty dragons who had rendered great service to their kind. Though many appeared youthful, any one of them would easily be five or six hundred years old or more.
They had once stood on the front lines of the Dragonfolk, but upon arriving here, they ceased to involve themselves in current affairs.
These dragons yearned to live more like humans: enjoying afternoon tea, tending to gardens, and cultivating flowers.
“Lady Faltis, your luggage has been placed. Should you require anything further, please do not hesitate to command us.”
The maid bowed respectfully as she spoke.
Eileen thought, ‘Oh no, my job’s at risk!’
“Understood,” Faltis acknowledged with a nod, and the two maids withdrew from the room.
Faltis took a cup and stepped out onto the balcony, observing the Dragonfolk below.
Some played flutes, others danced, and a few even engaged in small street businesses.
The Dragonfolk dwelling on the Sky-Colored Fantasy Isle essentially possessed everything they desired. What they truly lacked was spiritual solace.
Ironically, these were the very activities once scorned by humans, yet they had now become a source of delight for the Dragonfolk.
“The human way of life brings far more happiness than that of the Dragonfolk,” Faltis remarked.
However, Eileen disagreed with this sentiment. “Many humans are not happy either.”
“Like… you?”
“Something like that,” Eileen replied with an indifferent smile.
She had initially believed that becoming a Dragon Slayer would bring her an easier life.
She had thought that achieving B-rank status would grant her friends.
She had imagined that becoming an A-rank Dragon Slayer would allow her a brief respite.
She had truly believed that attaining S-rank status would make her a member of the Empire.
But Eileen now realized these were merely pretexts the Empire used to lure her in, step by insidious step.
Eileen gazed at the Dragonfolk below, a hint of envy in her eyes.
Perhaps this was the carefree childhood of an ordinary child in the Empire, unburdened by worries, free from endless considerations.
“Every time I come here, I always wish I could stay,” Faltis confessed.
Eileen could sense the profound weariness in Faltis’s tone.
“Then, once a suitable Golden Dragon Queen candidate is found, couldn’t Lady Faltis simply retire and come here?” Eileen suggested.
Not all successors acquired their position by slaying the previous queen; some, like Peroy, ascended differently.
If Faltis could find a worthy successor and mentor her to become the new queen, then Faltis could naturally abdicate the Golden Dragon Queen’s throne and come to the Sky-Colored Fantasy Isle.
Eileen suddenly looked at Faltis. ‘Could it be that I’m the one Faltis has been eyeing?’
“You’ve figured it out?”
“But, Lady Faltis, I’m a Silver Dragon…”
“You—my meaning is, you’re not entirely opposed to becoming the Golden Dragon Queen, are you?” Faltis inquired.
“No, no! How could I possibly become the Golden Dragon Queen? Lady Faltis, you are so formidable, you’ll surely… surely find an even more exceptional successor.” Eileen had initially intended to say Faltis could reign for a long time, but realizing that Faltis wished to step down, such a statement would have been ill-received. She quickly amended her words.
“Rest assured, I have never groomed you as a successor,” Faltis stated.
Eileen breathed a sigh of relief. “Is that so?”
“Indeed.”
Faltis took a sip of tea before continuing, “Within the Sky-Colored Fantasy Isle, there have been many former queens of other races, but never a single Golden Dragon Queen.”
“Lady Faltis… what do you mean by that?”
“It’s simple. It means that in this world, two Golden Dragon Queens cannot exist simultaneously.”
“Well, of course there’s only one queen, after all…”
“That’s not what I mean, Eileen. You should understand.”
Faltis’s words plunged Eileen into silence.
“‘Golden Dragon Queen’—that name is like a curse. Another Golden Dragon Queen only truly emerges after the reigning queen’s demise. In other words, I can never hope to live on this Sky-Colored Fantasy Isle.”
“Either I remain the Golden Dragon Queen indefinitely, or I become the guardian of the next Golden Dragon Queen, protecting the Dragon’s Treasury.”
Faltis spoke these words with an air of lightness, as if discussing someone else’s fate, as if she herself were not the Golden Dragon Queen.
“There’s always a first time for everything, isn’t there? Lady Faltis, you are so exceptional, arguably the most gifted among all Golden Dragon Queens. Therefore, it wouldn’t be strange for you to create rules that have never existed before, would it?” Eileen proposed.
“Yes, my emergence has indeed shattered many long-standing records.”
Faltis looked at Eileen, and among those broken records, Eileen herself was naturally included.
