Chapter 32: A World Revealed, A Dream Deferred

“Yun Que, do you know about this world?” Felicia suddenly asked.

“A little. Why?” Yun Que set down the half-eaten bread in her hand.

“You’re not going to ask me to tell you about it, are you?”

“Clever girl.” Felicia nodded.

“Aren’t you a traveler? You should know more than I do, shouldn’t you?” Yun Que looked at Felicia, a hint of confusion in her eyes.

“No choice, I’ve lost my memory. I’m currently trying to retrieve it,” Felicia replied, once again trotting out her convenient excuse of “amnesia.”

“Tsk, tsk, tsk, that’s truly terrible,” Yun Que said, shaking her head. A flicker of sympathy for Felicia crossed her face. “It’s clear you’ve lost a great deal of memories, so much so that you’ve even forgotten the common knowledge of this world.”

“Actually, I don’t know much myself, but I do know a little more than you.”

“This world is called the Continent of Revelation. And we are currently in what is likely the northeastern corner, a very remote area.”

Yun Que drew a circle, then marked an ‘X’ on its edge.

“The Continent of Revelation is home to many races, but the seven most prominent are humans, beastmen, elves, fairies, angels, demons, and dragons.”

“Of course, there are other races too, such as merfolk, vampires, and dwarves, but their power and influence are far inferior to the seven major races.”

“Among them, humans have two great empires: the Isoria Empire and the Catrans Empire. The village we’re currently in theoretically falls under the Isoria Empire’s territory.”

“Isoria lies in the east of the world, and Catrans in the west.”

“Naturally, this was how things used to be.”

“Now, the demon race has vanished without a trace, almost erased from existence. After the dragon race was purged, a few scattered across the Continent of Revelation, but most now rely on humans for survival, their status having plummeted.”

“It’s said that the Dragon Emperor even sold his newborn daughter to the resistance. Quite an interesting story, if you ask me.”

“…” Felicia said nothing, merely offering a strained smile.

“Why do you look like you’re crying while smiling?”

“It’s nothing, just reminiscing about some past events,” Felicia replied casually.

“The other races are dispersed throughout various parts of the Continent of Revelation. Angels are an exception; they dwell high above the ground, in the Azure of the World. Many people only hear tales of angels their entire lives but never actually see one.”

“However, it’s rumored that angels are the most powerful of all races. Even the war waged by the dragons and demons that swept across the continent didn’t affect the angels.”

“Angels are that powerful?”

“Well, angels live in a higher place, so it’s only normal for them to be a bit more powerful, isn’t it?” Yun Que remarked.

“…” Felicia found Yun Que’s logic rather peculiar. What did “living in a higher place makes them a bit more powerful” even mean?

She couldn’t quite grasp it.

As they talked, both Yun Que and Felicia finished their bread.

“Let’s go.” Yun Que stood up, crossed the small stream, and headed towards the forest.

Felicia followed behind Yun Que, looking around.

“I’m going to gather firewood. Why are you following me?”

“To play,” Felicia answered.

“?” Yun Que stared at Felicia suspiciously.

“Actually, I’m here to chop trees, like this.” Felicia punched a tree.

In the next second, the tree snapped under Felicia’s blow.

Yun Que watched with wide eyes as Felicia, with a single punch, broke a tree that would require three or four people to embrace.

“A…a monster…”

“I’m not a monster. I’m human,” Felicia stated.

“Then you must have been an incredibly powerful warrior before you lost your memory.”

“Perhaps? Who knows.” Felicia shrugged.

Ultimately, Yun Que tacitly allowed Felicia to follow. Yun Que gathered firewood ahead, while Felicia chatted with her from behind.

“Yun Que, do you have any dreams?”

“Me?” Yun Que stood up straight. “The word ‘dream’ seems quite distant for someone like me, so I’ve never really thought about it.”

“It’s not too late to think about it now. You still have plenty of time.”

“…” Yun Que pondered for a moment.

“If I had to say, it would probably be to save enough money to cure my illness, then open a shop in town, and live a simple, ordinary life.”

“Ordinary and unremarkable,” Felicia mused with a sigh.

“What about you? As a traveler, do you have any dreams?”

“I don’t either,” Felicia replied, shaking her head. “Perhaps it’s because I have no dreams that I embarked on this journey.”

“You still have a long time; you can think about it slowly,” Yun Que said.

Felicia found the phrase a bit familiar. After a moment of thought, wasn’t that exactly what she had just said to Yun Que? Being lectured with her own words was quite something.

“Then, if you’re saving money like this, how long will it take?”

“I don’t know… but it will definitely take a long time. After all, I only do the most common manual labor. I heard that merchants are currently buying beast pelts at high prices, so a group of people have switched to being hunters.”

Hearing Yun Que’s words, Felicia suddenly recalled seeing the body of a hunter earlier when she was walking past. It was likely one of the villagers from this unnamed village.

Time quietly passed, and the sun was about to set.

“Let’s go back,” Yun Que suddenly announced. “Though it’s a shame, we can’t go any deeper.”

“Why?” Felicia glanced at Yun Que’s half-filled basket.

“The forest at night is very dangerous. If we’re not careful, we’ll be attacked by wild beasts, and we…”

Before Yun Que could finish, she realized that Felicia was a powerhouse capable of breaking a giant tree with one punch.

“Oh, no, it seems I’m the only one here afraid of wild beasts. Thinking about it, I guess I’m holding you back.”

“Perhaps so?” Felicia wasn’t sure.

“So, do we go deeper, or do we continue back?”

“Let’s go deeper. If we encounter wild beasts, we might even make a profit,” Yun Que said, rubbing her hands together.

“We probably won’t encounter any wild beasts. I didn’t even see any when I slept in a tree last night,” Felicia stated.

“Our plan is ruined then,” Yun Que said, sounding a bit disappointed.

She took an unlit torch from her basket, snapped her fingers, and flames ignited at its tip.

“Can you hold this for me?”

“Sure.” Felicia took the torch.

The torch’s faint glow illuminated their surroundings, allowing Yun Que to see just enough.

As for Felicia… she didn’t need it to see.

Seraphina held a longsword wreathed in golden lightning. Before her lay a magic beast, now reduced to cinders.

This longsword, named Thunder Leap, was Seraphina’s weapon. There were few weapons of its caliber on the entire continent.

A thick layer of ice covered the surroundings, clearly indicating the magic beast’s ice attribute.

“Annoying creature,” Seraphina muttered, sheathing Thunder Leap. “But it seems there have been quite a lot of magic beasts recently?”

Along her journey, Seraphina had slain at least three or four magic beasts; she hadn’t bothered to count the exact number.

“There shouldn’t be this many magic beasts in previous years… Why is this happening?”

Unable to come to a conclusion, Seraphina didn’t dwell on the question.

“Never mind, it’s not important.”
