Chapter 65: The Half Soul

Outside the castle, Bai Ye visited once again.

But unlike last time, the guards recognized her. There was no wariness, and some even started chatting with her.

“Big Sister Bai Ye, what brings you here?” a bold guard asked curiously.

“From what you’re saying, I’m not allowed?” Bai Ye tilted her head.

“No, no, I didn’t mean that!” The guard quickly shook his head.

“Haha, just kidding.” Bai Ye chuckled. “I’m just here to check on the patient’s recovery and catch up with a friend.”

Seraphina soon arrived at the castle entrance.

She glanced at Bai Ye and said, “If you have something to say, let’s go inside.”

“How do you know I have something?” Bai Ye asked.

“When you come here, either you have something or I do. I’ve learned that pattern by now.” Seraphina rolled her eyes.

“Going to the usual spot?”

“The usual spot.” Bai Ye nodded.

Following behind Seraphina, Bai Ye couldn’t help but recall her conversation with someone earlier.

*****

A short while earlier.

Under a towering ancient green tree, a young girl crouched, staring blankly at the lake before her.

Suddenly, a breeze blew, and ripples spread across the lake.

This was the very center of the Elf Sea, the birthplace of countless elves, where the Tree of Life stood.

And the young girl was Bai Ye.

For some reason, strange memories had been appearing in her mind lately, and her impression of Felicia grew stronger.

They had only met once.

‘I can’t figure it out…’ Bai Ye murmured.

“What are you thinking about?”

A voice came from behind Bai Ye.

She turned to look at the newcomer.

It was a noblewoman with deep green hair, wearing a white robe. On the chest of the robe was a pink flower pattern, and on the back was a green ancient tree—the Tree of Life.

Most importantly, her ears were pointed, marking her as an elf.

“Mas… Your Holiness the Pope, what brings you here?” Bai Ye asked respectfully.

Before her stood one of the highest existences in the entire Tianqi Continent: the Life Pope, Qingyou.

In short, Bai Ye and Qingyou had a relationship akin to master and disciple, or even mother and daughter.

Bai Ye felt not only fear and respect for her “mother” but also other emotions, such as aspiration.

“We’re not in the outside world; no need to be so formal.” Qingyou said. “Speak your mind freely.”

“Ever since I learned your identity, I can’t really speak freely anymore.” Bai Ye sighed.

The noblewoman before her was someone whose mere footstep could shake the entire Tianqi Continent—both in power and status.

“However, I do have two things troubling me lately. You lived a thousand years ago, and it’s said you’ve met the god of life, so you’re well-informed. I hope you can answer me.” Bai Ye thought for a moment and spoke to Qingyou.

“Oh? Rarely do I see you troubled. Go ahead.” Qingyou became curious.

“The first thing is about my advancement.” Bai Ye began. “A few years ago, I felt a bottleneck. Neither my life magic nor my personal strength could improve any further.”

“The second thing is…”

Bai Ye briefly told Qingyou about her encounter with Felicia.

“As for the first thing… Actually, I’ve always known.”

“Huh?” Bai Ye was even more confused.

“When I found you back then, I noticed your uniqueness.” Qingyou replied. “That uniqueness is…”

“Your soul is only half.”

“Half a soul? In that case, life magic should be able to heal it. What’s so special about that?”

Life magic could heal injuries, even extend lifespan. A mere half soul shouldn’t be a problem.

The Life Church even had those skilled in soul magic, capable of healing the soul.

“That’s the special part.” Qingyou teased.

“Please explain.” Bai Ye’s expression turned serious.

After piquing Bai Ye’s interest, Qingyou continued.

“Your half soul isn’t ordinary. Others have a damaged soul that can be slowly repaired through magic or over time.”

“But you… seem to have been born with only half a soul. No method can replenish it.”

Bai Ye looked puzzled.

This was the first time she had heard of such a special soul deficiency.

“Your inability to advance in life magic and strength is due to this.” Qingyou went on.

“And… if left unchecked, you will eventually die from this congenital half soul.”

The consequence was severe.

“Then what should I do?”

“That’s the problem.” Qingyou handed a paper to Bai Ye. “What’s written here may be the only way to save you.”

Bai Ye read the contents, and her expression grew complicated.

“This…”

“You should know how to choose.” Qingyou patted Bai Ye on the shoulder and left.

Bai Ye didn’t ask further. She stood there, dazed.

*****

Bai Ye and Seraphina sat facing each other. This time, Seraphina didn’t pour tea or cola, because Bai Ye had brought a jug of wine herself.

“By the way, how’s that little dragon?” Bai Ye asked.

“Her body has almost fully recovered. She just needs a few more rounds of treatment.” Seraphina took a calm sip of tea.

“So, what’s your business here?”

“It’s not a big deal, really. I just wanted to check on the little dragon, to make sure she’s okay.” Bai Ye smiled and took a gulp of wine.

“Want some? It’s good.”

“I don’t drink that stuff.” Seraphina replied helplessly.

“Then your life is incomplete.” Bai Ye shook her head in mock disappointment.

“But I’m still curious: why do you care so much about Felicia? You’ve only met once, right?” Seraphina voiced her doubt.

“This? Think of it as a doctor’s care for a patient. I may not be serious and unreliable, but I am a doctor after all.” Bai Ye answered casually.

“Alright.” Seraphina nodded, as if convinced.

“I’ll take you to her.”
