Chapter 39: The Price of Resistance

“….I must be dreaming,” Felicia muttered, pinching her own cheek.

A sharp sting followed. It hurt, excruciatingly so.

Verdict delivered: this was no dream.

“Ah ha ha ha ha, the weather is truly splendid today,” Felicia chirped, attempting to divert the conversation.

“Playtime is over. It’s time to come back with me,” Seraphina stated, extending a hand towards Felicia.

“What if I refuse?” Felicia challenged.

“You have no right to refuse,” Seraphina’s voice was firm, leaving no room for argument. “You will either come with me willingly, or you will be dragged along.”

….A flicker of hesitation crossed Felicia’s eyes.

“My patience is wearing thin. If you continue to waste time here, I will have no choice but to take you by force.”

“Though the outcome remains the same, if you come with me willingly, I can still offer leniency in your punishment. However, if you persist in resisting….”

Seraphina did not finish her sentence, but the implication was clear: if Felicia were to be forcibly taken back, her immediate future would be far from pleasant.

The silver-haired girl stood before Seraphina, her face etched with indecision. Her body trembled, and her hands clenched into fists, a mixture of anger and unwillingness evident in her posture.

“I… I understand….” Felicia finally conceded, slowly beginning to walk towards Seraphina.

The effort of speaking those words seemed to have drained all her strength, causing Felicia to move at a snail’s pace.

Seraphina, however, was in no rush, watching her with an amused expression.

‘No matter how much Felicia tries to stall, she will eventually have to return obediently,’ Seraphina thought, convinced of her victory.

“Now! Accelerate!” Felicia seized the moment Seraphina’s guard lowered, activating Taosu’s ability: Acceleration.

In an instant, Felicia’s speed surged, carrying her hundreds of meters away in the blink of an eye.

“This is my escape route! Hahahaha~” If circumstances had allowed, Felicia might even have turned to mock Seraphina.

However, she could barely control her suddenly explosive speed. Mocking Seraphina would have to wait for another time.

‘Perhaps next time, I can try?’

Just as Felicia believed the situation was decided and Seraphina couldn’t possibly catch up, a spatial portal materialized before her. Seraphina immediately leaped out of it.

“?” A massive question mark seemed to hover above Felicia’s head at that moment.

Seraphina could use spatial teleportation?! Felicia realized.

If she didn’t change direction immediately, she would collide with Seraphina.

However, Felicia found herself unable to fully control her speed in this accelerated state, let alone execute a turn.

She could, of course, deactivate the magic. Yet, by the time Felicia recalled this option, she was already on a collision course with Seraphina.

“We’re going to crashhhhhh!!!”

Naturally, Seraphina had no intention of using her own body to withstand Felicia’s ‘dragon meat battle tank’. With a flick of her right hand, she conjured a transparent magical barrier.

With a resounding *thud*, Felicia slammed into the magical barrier Seraphina had erected, immediately losing consciousness.

“….” Seraphina gazed at the unconscious Felicia, her heart utterly unperturbed, a hint of amusement even stirring within her.

She stepped forward, examining Felicia’s body and gently shaking her head.

After confirming, Felicia was indeed knocked out, but thankfully, she had only fainted, sustaining no severe injuries.

“Should I call you clever, or foolish?”

Seraphina looked down at Felicia, who lay sprawled on the ground, her eyes turning cold.

She did indeed care for Felicia, her ‘pet,’ but a pet was still a pet, after all.

It was her previous leniency that had given Felicia a fleeting illusion of freedom.

As for what came next… Felicia’s life would likely become far less comfortable.

****

“Hiss… My head hurts so much….” Felicia clutched her head with one hand, crouching by the bed, recalling the events before she lost consciousness.

She had successfully used a tactic to trick Seraphina, then used acceleration magic to escape, and after that…

“I can’t believe I crashed directly into a barrier and passed out. It’s truly… Sigh, speeding is dangerous,” Felicia lamented, feeling for the first time that the acceleration ability was somewhat unreliable.

She began to observe the room she was in.

Judging by the architectural style, it was undoubtedly within Seraphina’s castle.

The room’s furnishings were remarkably simple: a bed, a desk, a wardrobe, and a bookshelf devoid of any books. The layout was not much different from the bedroom she had fled from.

The key difference, however, was the absence of windows, preventing any view of the outside. Moreover, the room’s lighting was dim, even flickering intermittently.

Felicia mused that this room would be an excellent location for filming a horror movie; it would likely be a hit.

She extended her right hand, intending to smooth her hair—a small habit she had developed recently.

Then, Felicia noticed her left hand felt tugged by something.

“?” Felicia looked down to find that, at some point, a pair of handcuffs had been placed on her wrists.

Remarkably, these handcuffs were even rose gold.

Where there were handcuffs, ankle cuffs were naturally present too. The girl’s slender ankles were restrained by two rose gold rings, connected by a golden chain.

Her clothes had also been changed to a white shirt, and all traces of dirt and dust were gone. Someone must have given her a bath while she was asleep.

“Well, isn’t this a pure prison-style decor,” Felicia quipped.

Through the faint light, Felicia could see the door leading to the outside.

She hopped off the bed and stepped towards it.

The ankle shackles forced Felicia to take very small steps. If her stride was even slightly too wide, her ankles would be painfully pulled.

“Ouch!”

Without realizing it, Felicia took a slightly larger step, lost her balance, and tumbled to the floor.

Following that, Felicia became even more cautious, avoiding any further pulls. She finally reached the door without further incident.

Actions that she could normally perform with ease had now become incredibly difficult due to these restraints, leaving Felicia momentarily speechless.

She grasped the doorknob and pressed down…

It wouldn’t budge.

“Hmm? Is this right?” Felicia refused to believe it. She continued to push down, attempting to open the door.

It seemed Felicia’s repeated attempts triggered something. The handcuffs on her wrists began to emit a faint golden glow.

“….” Felicia froze. She seemed to recall seeing this kind of light somewhere before.

Ah, she remembered now. It was the lightning that had coiled around Seraphina’s longsword. The glow of that lightning was identical to the light she saw now.

“Does that mean….”

The next moment, Felicia’s suspicion was confirmed. The handcuffs suddenly discharged electricity, and golden lightning spread throughout her entire body.

“Ahhhhhh!!!”

The lightning repeatedly coursed through Felicia’s body, causing agony akin to being flayed alive. It wasn’t long before Felicia completely lost consciousness.
