“Oh, fire spirits, display your supreme majesty—Fireball Spell!”
Accompanied by an impassioned chant, a massive fireball surged from the tip of the magic wand, shooting into the sky and bursting into a dazzling explosion like fireworks.
“Wow! That’s amazing!” Seeing this, Shaula clapped her hands in astonishment.
“That’s how you use a Fireball spell. Shaula, you try it now!”
After demonstrating the most basic Fireball spell in front of Shaula, Charlotte handed the magic wand to her.
In the summer of Saint’s Calendar 998, Charlotte, who had finally passed her promotion exam, received a half-month vacation to return home. She naturally returned to the home she hadn’t seen in a year to enjoy the warmth of her family.
At this time, her sister Shaula had reached the age where she could start learning magic. In one month, she would be able to participate in the Starsea Magic Academy’s entrance exam.
Shaula was extremely interested in magic and completely idolized her omnipotent magical genius older sister. The task of teaching the child introductory magic naturally fell to Charlotte.
However, Shaula didn’t possess Charlotte’s incredible talent of being able to cast magic without a wand or chanting. Therefore, Charlotte had to start from the very first step: how to use a wand and how to chant.
As the saying goes, patience is key, and haste makes waste.
Early one morning, Charlotte took Shaula on her broomstick and flew to the empty back hill behind their village. This place used to be where Master Chloe taught her magic. It was the perfect place to practice basic spells.
‘Speaking of which, how is Master Chloe doing now?’
‘It’s been five years since I last saw her.’
Although Master Chloe sent her a letter every year since she entered the Starsea Magic Academy, this year was probably no different. When she got back, she would likely find another mysterious letter waiting in the mailbox outside the Night-Glow Tower.
But even so, Charlotte still preferred to see Master Chloe face-to-face.
She couldn’t help but feel nostalgic for the happy times she spent with Master Chloe.
‘No, this isn’t the time to reminisce about the past.’
Charlotte lightly shook her head, then pulled out the wand she had prepared for Shaula and began teaching her the simplest spell: the Fireball spell.
“Just like that, Ula-la, you try it now!”
“Mhm!” Shaula excitedly took the wand, mimicking Charlotte’s previous movement. She swung the wand toward the sun and loudly shouted the incantation for the Fireball spell.
However, after shouting the entire incantation, only a tiny wisp of flame ignited at the tip of the wand, like a lightly pressed lighter. The flame quickly went out.
“Huh?” Shaula looked surprised.
“No, no, Ula-la, you’re doing it wrong. The incantation needs to be recited, not shouted! Shouting it out with no feeling will not get you any help from the spirits!”
“Is that so?” Shaula scratched her head and tried again.
The result this time was decent. The wisp of flame lasted for a full ten seconds before going out.
But this was still far from what a Fireball spell should look like.
Charlotte gently shook her head.
“No, no, your posture is wrong this time. When casting magic, you need to stick your chest out. Don’t slouch like a shrimp with soft legs. Otherwise, the magical power in your body won’t be able to smoothly transmit through your magic circuits to the wand in your hand.”
“Is that so?” Following Charlotte’s instruction, Shaula stuck out her chest. Instantly, a rounded curve, like a sharp blade, pierced Charlotte’s pupils, leaving her speechless.
Shaula’s previously unremarkable chest instantly became a B-cup front armor that Charlotte envied greatly.
Charlotte looked down at her own chest, which was less than an A-cup. She squeezed it with both hands, trying to increase her own armor rank.
Unfortunately, Charlotte’s body was not a sponge. No matter how hard she squeezed, nothing happened.
Shaula, who was three years younger than her, had already started developing, yet her own body remained like this.
‘Is there really no magic in this world that can enlarge a specific body part?’
While Charlotte was silently sulking, Shaula successfully summoned a fist-sized fireball.
However, the fireball looked starved. It drew a weak arc and thunked onto the grass only five paces away from Shaula.
“Ugh, what happened this time?” Shaula looked helpless, asking Charlotte for help.
“Your magical power didn’t condense into a single point, which meant your Fireball spell lacked explosive power. It was only natural that it couldn’t shoot out.”
Although dissatisfied with Shaula’s development, Charlotte seriously instructed her sister.
“Eh? Then what should I do?”
“You can only practice more to let the magic circuits in your body memorize the feeling of concentrating magical power into a single point.”
“Concentrating magical power into a single point?” Shaula nodded as if she understood. She then raised her wand, gently closed her eyes, searching for the feeling of magical power.
After a brief silence, Shaula seemed to have found the feeling. She opened her eyes and recited the incantation.
Instantly, a watermelon-sized fireball appeared at the tip of the wand. It arced like a three-point shot, landed on the grass twenty meters away, and blasted the surrounding area bare.
“Not bad, not bad! As expected of my sister, you’ve mastered the trick to using the Fireball spell so quickly!” Charlotte clapped her hands excitedly.
“But this level is still no match for Sister Charlotte’s Fireball spell. I’ll try again!”
Shaula tried several more times, but the results were similar. All the summoned fireballs exploded on the grass twenty or thirty meters away, and none of them detonated in the air.
“It seems the magical power isn’t concentrated enough!” Shaula said, biting her lip in frustration.
“Well, Ula-la, don’t be discouraged. This is your first time learning magic. To be able to do this much, you’re already amazing!”
“But I want to become as strong as Sister Charlotte! I absolutely cannot give up my effort for the sake of self-satisfaction!”
“But the more anxious you are, the more counterproductive it will be. It’s not a bad idea to just relax sometimes!” Charlotte reached out and held Shaula’s shoulders, making their eyes meet. “Ula-la, you’re not learning magic for anyone else, you’re learning magic for yourself. Don’t let magic become an obstacle to your progress, okay?”
Hearing Charlotte’s advice, Shaula nodded as if she understood.
“Alright, I’ll listen to you, Sister Charlotte. I’ll take a break now!”
“That’s more like it!”
“Speaking of which, Sister Charlotte, why don’t you demonstrate how to concentrate magical power into a single point!”
“Me demonstrating? Heheh, your Sister Charlotte is a magical genius! Concentrating magical power into a single point is something I can do effortlessly!”
Saying this, Charlotte raised her right hand and pointed toward the sky.
Without even a furrowed brow, a massive fireball shot up toward the sky.
The recoil from firing the fireball instantly kicked up a cloud of dust from the ground beneath Charlotte’s feet.
“Heheh, how was that? Isn’t your Sister Charlotte amazing!” Charlotte put her hands on her hips, her face clearly showing that she wanted praise.
However, perhaps due to her overconfidence, the fireball did not detonate in mid-air. Instead, it landed on the distant horizon.
The moment Charlotte’s words faded, a massive mushroom cloud rose in the distance.
Seeing this, Shaula’s eyes widened and her mouth dropped open in shock.
“Sister Charlotte, that direction… isn’t that our house?”
“Eh? No way?”
