On the way home, Yukina nagged Charlotte incessantly.
The sun had already set, and the streetscape had grown dim.
Yukina had missed half a day of school for no reason just to find Charlotte. She feared she would end up like Charlotte, busy all day just to make up for lost academic credits.
Lillian, walking beside them, stayed silent throughout Yukina’s nagging. After all, she had given Yukina a severe beating herself; she was lucky Yukina didn’t want to skin her alive and serve her as a side dish.
However, after Yukina had been rambling for a long time, she turned and saw that Charlotte was lost in thought, not listening at all. Yukina’s anger flared up instantly.
“Brother, brother! Are you even listening to me?”
Charlotte was currently replaying the words the middle-aged man had spoken to her.
“Give my regards to Shera.” Just a short seven-word sentence, but it had kept Charlotte in deep thought for two blocks.
‘Shera? Who is he talking about?’
In her memory, she didn’t know anyone by that name.
Even so, she wasn’t unfamiliar with the name. After all, it was the name of the first witch in the other world, a name known to everyone. Basically, anyone who didn’t know the name was suspected of being a Demon Clan spy.
‘Wait, could that man be talking about that Shera Hirakami?’
‘No, that shouldn’t be possible! Judging by his tone, he seemed very familiar with her, as if they had worked together before.’
‘However, the Shera in my memory was a witch active a thousand years ago. She’s been dead for centuries. No matter how you look at it, that man couldn’t possibly be connected to a witch from a millennium ago.’
‘So what exactly did his words mean?’
Charlotte wanted to continue her deep contemplation, but a stinging pain in her cheek snapped her back to reality. She found Yukina pinching her cheek with a look of dissatisfaction.
“Brother, what are you daydreaming about again? Can’t you just listen to me for once?”
“No, I was thinking for your sake, Yukina!”
“For me? Are you sure your head isn’t just full of yourself?”
“What is there for me to think about? Everything that’s happened recently involves you, Yukina! That azure-haired man who corrupted Xiaoxi, that strange middle-aged man, and that crazy woman who drew a real sword on us—these people are of unknown origin. You have to be careful in the future, Yukina!”
“I think the person you should be most careful about is yourself. You let Lillian turn into such a massive dragon and almost burn down that abandoned factory. You’re a terrible master! If this got on the internet, it would cause a massive uproar!”
“Lady Charlotte,” Lillian spoke up, vouching for Yoruya. “Lady Yoruya doesn’t seem like the type to plot against us. she’s a very good person. She reached out to help me when I was helpless, even though we had just met. Although I don’t understand why she’s so hostile toward you, Lady Charlotte, I think if you two get along, you could become reliable allies!”
“Allies? With that woman?” Just imagining the scene made Charlotte shiver. “Forget it. It’s better if we just remain strangers who respect each other’s boundaries.”
“Actually, speaking of which, when I first met her, she said something rather strange.”
“Strange? What did she say?”
“She said, ‘You’re not from around here, are you?'”
‘Not from around here?’
‘At first, I thought she just meant I was from out of town. But thinking back, no matter how I looked at the time, there was no way to tell if I was a local or not. Why was she able to tell at a glance that I wasn’t from “here”?’
‘Could “here” have referred not to this city, but to this world? Was she also from another world?’
The thought sent a chill down Charlotte’s spine.
If that were true, then the middle-aged man claiming to be her father was probably also from another world.
“Hey, hey, seriously? Besides that azure-haired man, are there really this many illegal immigrants from another world? Is cross-world magic that popular now?”
“Right!” At this thought, Charlotte hurriedly raised her hand, pulled an image of the demon-masked, azure-haired man from her memory, and showed it to Lillian. “Lillian, look at this person. Have we encountered this man before?”
“Hmm?” Lillian took the image from Charlotte with a look of confusion. However, the moment she saw the man, her expression turned into one of extreme terror, and her body began to shake uncontrollably.
“Eh? Lillian, what’s wrong? Is this man some kind of terrifying demon king?”
“Lady Charlotte, he… he is the enemy who wiped out our Red Dragon Clan and destroyed our home! The Blue Dragon King of the Blue Dragon Clan—Blue Dragon Emperor Xuan!”
“Eh? Seriously?” Hearing the name, Charlotte looked stunned.
“It’s absolutely him! I would recognize him even if he turned to ash! I could never mistake him! He has the scent of my kinsmen’s blood on him.”
“You can smell his scent just through a picture?” Charlotte couldn’t help but scoff.
Judging by Lillian’s reaction, the fact that the azure-haired man was Blue Dragon Emperor Xuan was a certainty.
But that brought up more questions. She had never met this guy before. Why did he say he wanted revenge for a twenty-year-old grudge?
She hadn’t even been born twenty years ago!
‘Did he mistake me for a silver-haired witch he met twenty years ago who looks just like me?’
‘A silver-haired witch from twenty years ago? Could it be Instructor Mashiro?’
If she remembered correctly, The Adventures of the Mist Witch explicitly mentioned that Mom Rhynes had taken Chloe and Mashiro as her disciples before meeting Dad Roland.
It was entirely possible that she was taking the fall for Instructor Mashiro.
And furthermore, hadn’t Lillian entered the void rift after her? Why was she able to arrive in the real world a month before Charlotte?
‘Is the flow of time different between the other world and the real world?’
No, it wasn’t just the flow of time; even the direction of time wasn’t entirely consistent.
In other words, the people from another world appearing in the real world very likely came from completely different eras.
Following this logic, could the Blue Dragon Emperor Xuan she encountered actually be from the future of the other world?
