Chapter 40: Is it funny that Mom erased my memories?

Sunlight was bright.

Several colorful butterflies fluttered among the flowers.

Near this group of butterflies, a little girl with purple twin tails was staring at them with wide eyes, her face full of curiosity.

Then, she smiled brightly and chased after the butterflies, looking very happy.

While playing, she didn’t forget to turn around and wave at the silver-haired girl lying on the grass of a small hill not far away.

“Sister Charlotte, the butterflies here are so pretty! Come and look!”

Hearing the call from the little purple-haired girl, little Charlotte sat up on the grass like a zombie, looking completely drained, as if she had been awake all night at an internet cafe.

“So boring!”

Little Charlotte couldn’t help but sigh.

She was incredibly envious of Shaula right now, who could play carefree with the butterflies.

If she were truly a child, that would have been wonderful.

Unfortunately, although her body was only eight years old, her mental age was already twenty-five.

She was originally a male high school student living in a modern city but was hit by a large truck for not looking when crossing the street and was reincarnated into another world as a girl.

While being reincarnated as a girl was quite interesting at first, after getting used to the body, she felt that a girl’s body wasn’t anything special. She no longer had those worldly desires.

Moreover, this other world was not only very backward in terms of technology, but it also lacked something transcendental like magic.

All she could do every day was play with a bunch of butterflies in this vast meadow like a wild child. It was utterly boring.

‘I wish I could find something to do!’

Rather than playing with a bunch of butterflies on this meadow, she’d rather go exploring in the forest behind the hill. Maybe there was a hidden treasure chest waiting for her to open.

But.

Little Charlotte turned her head to look at the orange-haired maid standing not far behind her.

With that maid around, the probability of her successfully sneaking out was practically zero.

That person was like a GPS tracker attached to her. Every time she tried to sneak out, that person always found her immediately and dragged her back without question.

‘How did Mom Rhynes hire such a difficult maid?’

Little Charlotte sighed and then looked up at the sky.

She felt like she had forgotten something. Was it just her imagination?

Come to think of it, before she was reincarnated to this world, she also had a cute little sister in the real world. It had been so long. She wondered how she was doing.

“Sister Charlotte, come and play with me!”

Shaula, not far away, was still waving and calling to her.

“Ula-la, you play by yourself for a bit. Big sister needs to rest for a while longer.”

Little Charlotte simply lay back down on the grass.

Coincidentally, a black butterfly flew over and landed right on the tip of her nose, as if mistaking it for a nectar-filled flower stigma.

Little Charlotte was about to blow a puff of air to chase the butterfly away when a voice suddenly entered her mind.

“Little sister Charlotte!”

Hearing the call, little Charlotte’s eyes widened in surprise.

It was a voice she had never heard before, yet for some reason, it felt so familiar.

‘Who is calling me?’

“It’s me! I’m your Master Chloe!” The black butterfly on her nose fluttered its wings twice, as if to confirm that the source of the voice was it.

‘Huh? My Master? What nonsense are you talking about? And are you this butterfly?’

Although she didn’t understand the reason, little Charlotte found that she could communicate with the other party without speaking, which was quite convenient.

“There’s no time to explain! Listen! Your memory has been modified by Rhynes! If you want to continue learning magic with your Master, you must break the sealing magic that Rhynes placed on you! And the way to break it is—”

Before the voice could finish speaking, a broomstick suddenly slammed into little Charlotte’s face, abruptly cutting off the voice.

“Ah—” Struck by the sudden blow, little Charlotte cried out in pain. She quickly got up and yelled at the maid who had arbitrarily hit her face with the broomstick. “Sister Shiro, what was that for!”

The maid, who was pinching the black butterfly she had just captured, replied without expression, “Dealing with pests.”

“Are you dealing with pests or dealing with me?” Little Charlotte complained to the maid, holding her stinging face.

The maid slightly tilted her head.

“Is there a difference?”

“You…”

Little Charlotte clenched her fists. Right now, she really wanted to beat up this maid who constantly caused trouble for her, but her eight-year-old body was absolutely no match for her.

‘I’ll remember this grudge. I’ll let you be smug for a few days!’

Knowing she was outmatched, little Charlotte could only swallow her anger and lie back down on the grass to rest.

‘Was what I just heard true?’

‘Mom Rhynes modified my memory?’

‘She’s such a gentle person, and I love her the most. How could she possibly do something like that?’

‘And what benefit would she gain from doing that?’

‘Also, what’s all this about continuing to learn magic? There’s no magic in this world at all!’

‘I must have misheard. I must have wanted to adventure in the forest behind the hill so badly that I spontaneously hallucinated this entire scenario.’

‘I’ll just go back to sleep!’

However, just as little Charlotte closed her eyes to rest, Shiro’s voice came again.

“Miss Charlotte!”

“Huh? What is it now?” Little Charlotte opened her eyes impatiently.

“Time to go. It’s time for lunch.”

“Tsk, fine, fine!”

Little Charlotte could only grudgingly crawl up from the grass and shout to Shaula, who was still playing not far away.

“Shaula, it’s time to go back and eat!”

“Okay!” Hearing little Charlotte’s call, Shaula replied and then obediently ran over.

Accompanied by Shiro, little Charlotte and Shaula returned to their mansion and sat down at the dining table to wait for lunch.

The lunch preparation was the responsibility of the other maids. Therefore, Shiro left the mansion after handing over the supervision of the two children to the other maids and went to a small house in the backyard.

This was their mansion’s warehouse, which stored necessities like rice, salt, and firewood.

But Shiro wasn’t here to retrieve those things.

In the corner of the warehouse, there was a not-very-obvious hidden door.

She opened the hidden door, revealing a flight of stairs going down.

There was a basement beneath the warehouse.

Shiro walked down the stairs. As she did so, she gently wiped her hair with her right hand, and in the blink of an eye, her hair changed from orange to silver-white.

Upon reaching the basement, she stared at the black-haired witch frozen inside a massive block of ice crystal and said coldly.

“Senior Disciple, don’t struggle anymore. Just stay put for two more years, and you’ll be fine.”

This silver-haired maid was, without a doubt, the Sun Witch—Mashiro Eve, Rhynes’s other disciple.
