“Also, place this potted plant in this position.”
“Miya, do you have any more agate stones?”
“We need to pave some here as well.”
After arriving at a deserted courtyard, Miya, Miki, and Elsa began the so-called “mission.”
On the surface, it appeared to be merely arranging various items in a fixed order at specific locations according to a diagram provided by the Ice Wolf Clan.
However, for Elsa, who had already advanced to her third year at the Starsea Magic Academy, the underlying principles were perfectly clear.
All things in the world possess spirit; even a single weed contains a trace amount of magical power.
By placing these inconspicuous items in pre-determined positions, magical channels would be created between them.
Without a doubt, this was the most fundamental principle of constructing a magic circle.
The Ice Wolf Clan wanted these catgirls to create pseudo-magic circles by arranging various items to achieve some unspeakable secret.
But there was still a problem: activating a magic circle also required a corresponding amount of magical power.
If only that one Ice Wolf man had infiltrated Tsumuguri City, why would he have the catgirls create pseudo-magic circles for him?
He couldn’t possibly appear in five distant locations simultaneously to inject magical power and activate these circles.
So, what exactly was he trying to accomplish by going to such great lengths to dispatch these catgirls?
Staring at the empty lot where everything had been arranged, Elsa fell into deep thought.
At that moment, Miya walked to Elsa’s side and gently patted her shoulder.
“Misha, leave this place to Miki to handle; we need to go to the final location.”
“Eh?”
Snapping back to reality at Miya’s words, Elsa glanced at Miki, who was still adjusting the details, and then followed Miya’s footsteps.
However, she was still filled with doubt.
“Is it just the two of us? Shouldn’t we wait for Miki?”
“Miki has to stay here until the final task tonight; only the two of us will complete the rest.”
Elsa couldn’t help but feel a shiver.
The magic circle was already set up, so why leave Miki here?
In the next second, she figured out the answer.
‘Could she be the magical power source intended to activate the circle?’
“Miya, let me ask first, did catgirls stay behind at the previous mission sites as well?”
“Yes, Milo, Miqi, and Mixi all stayed at their spots.”
“We will also stay behind after finishing the last task.”
“Once the full moon rises tonight, we will sit in the center of that empty lot, and only then will the mission Master gave us be truly complete.”
Hearing Miya’s words, Elsa’s face filled with horror.
Did Miya even know what that final step of the mission implied?
Undoubtedly, it was to convert their life force into the magical power required to activate the circle.
If the magical power needed for the circle was immense, their life force might be completely drained by the array.
To put it simply, this was a sacrifice.
No, she couldn’t allow this group of innocent catgirls to lose their lives for no reason; she had to stop them and thwart the Ice Wolf Clan’s scheme.
But she didn’t know where the other three catgirls had set up their magic circles; what should she do?
She could only continue following Miya for a while longer and find an opportunity to ask for the other catgirls’ locations.
They headed toward the final location along dark, narrow alleys.
Because their appearance differed significantly from normal people, they had to stick to deserted alleys to avoid discovery.
When they encountered wide streets, they considered jumping directly across from the rooftops.
With the jumping ability of a catgirl’s legs, crossing a street was a simple task.
However, this proved difficult for Elsa, who had only just become a catgirl.
Jump to a rooftop twenty meters away in one go?
Even if you were Jackie Chan, you wouldn’t be able to jump that far!
Even though Miya stood on the opposite roof cheering her on, Elsa didn’t dare take that step forward.
Ultimately, Miya swiped a clothesline from a neighboring building and stretched it between the two structures, allowing Elsa to slide across to the other roof.
“I really envy those witches who can fly freely in the sky!”
“Wait, I am a witch!”
Elsa, exhausted from the ordeal, let out a soft sigh of lament.
As they continued forward, they drew closer to the final location.
“As long as we cross this street, the alley behind it is where we need to go.”
Looking at the map in her hand, Miya pointed to the alley across the street.
Seeing the chance, Elsa leaned in to glance at the map in Miya’s hand.
Hard work paid off; she finally found the opportunity to learn the locations of the other catgirls.
It was a map of Tsumuguri City, with five locations marked on the city’s perimeter, forming the points of a pentagram.
Seeing these five points marked on the map, Elsa finally understood what these magic circles were meant for.
When these five circles were activated simultaneously to form channels for magical energy to flow between them, they would create a massive magic array.
Without a doubt, this was a grand array targeting Tsumuguri City itself.
But what the specific effect of this grand array was, she still didn’t know.
Even if she asked Miya, the girl likely wouldn’t have the answer.
Forget it; while there was still some time, she should report this intelligence to Master Mashiro.
With that thought, Elsa prepared to duck out of the alley and run toward the Starsea Magic Academy.
But just then, Miya suddenly raised her hand to stop Elsa, pulling her to the side to press her against the wall.
“Careful, the witches are here! Whatever you do, don’t let the witches find you!”
Miya whispered urgently.
Sure enough, after a brief silence, a group of witches riding magic brooms whizzed past the street in front of them.
None of them noticed the two cute catgirls hiding in the dark alley nearby.
The group of witches quickly flew past, but since witches have an exceptionally keen perception of magic, the two had to remain hidden in the alley for a while longer.
Seemingly to ease the tense atmosphere, Miya and Elsa began to chat about personal matters.
“By the way, Misha, were you also saved by the Master?”
“Eh?”
Hearing Miya’s words, Elsa looked confused.
“Saved? By whom? By that Ice Wolf? Does that guy even save people?”
“Sorry, maybe I hit my head too hard; I can’t quite remember things from before.”
Elsa brushed it off with a casual lie.
She thought Miya would end the conversation there, but instead, it was as if a floodgate had opened, and Miya began telling her story.
“All five of us were saved by the Master.”
“We were originally a group of children living happily in Hajimide Village.”
“But suddenly one day, while we were playing outside the village, we were kidnapped by a group of bandits.”
“They wanted to sell us to a nearby s*ave trader.”
“Fortunately, on the way, the Master suddenly appeared and killed all the bandits, saving us.”
“Afterward, the Master promised that if we did one thing for him, he would take us all home once it was done.”
“That is why we followed the Master to this strange city.”
“It’s quite funny, isn’t it? We traveled all this way just to do something for a reason we don’t even know ourselves.”
Hearing Miya recount their various hardships, Elsa responded with a serious expression.
“No, it’s not something to be mocked.”
“You are just trying to return to your hometown and the embrace of your family.”
“Such a humble dream should never be trampled upon by anyone.”
“I won’t let anyone trample on your dreams.”
Saying this, Elsa took Miya’s hands in hers.
“Miya, can you trust me?”
