Noticing Alice’s strangely intent gaze, Charlotte grew suspicious.
‘Hmm? Why is she looking at me like that? Am I bothering her here? That makes sense. This place is in the middle of nowhere, with no decent villages within a ten-mile radius. A large group of Holy Knights gathering here can’t be for a simple picnic. They must be here for some kind of operation.’
‘My sudden visit must have disrupted their plans.’
‘It seems I shouldn’t linger here!’
“Um… am I disturbing your work?” Charlotte lightly scratched the back of her head to ease the awkwardness. “If so, I apologize. I’ll leave immediately.”
Saying this, Charlotte was about to pull out her magic broomstick and fly away.
“No, not at all,” Alice stood in front of Charlotte and said nonchalantly. “I’d say you arrived at the perfect time.”
“The perfect time?”
“We are currently dealing with a rather tricky matter. However, with a Witch-sama assisting us, I believe we can resolve this matter perfectly and quickly.”
“Uh… is this an attempt to give me a commission?”
“You could say that, but we haven’t prepared any payment. I’m afraid we’ll disappoint Witch-sama if you’re looking to earn a reward.”
“No, I’m not a witch who only cares about money. Payment is completely irrelevant to me. However,” Charlotte paused, changing the subject. “If I help you complete this commission, you only need to write a letter to the Starsea Magic Academy, confirming that I helped the Holy Knights.”
‘As long as I take this letter to Instructor Mashiro, I’ll surely get some academic credits! That’s a huge achievement!’
“That’s no problem at all. My sister is also studying at the Starsea Magic Academy. I’ll have her deliver the letter to you afterward. By the way, Witch-sama, what is your name?”
“Uh, I’m Charlotte. Charlotte Chartier. I’m quite famous in our academy. Your sister should recognize me.”
“Charlotte? I think she has mentioned you. The academy has a certain ‘Calamity Princess’ who constantly messes up commissions, causes huge trouble for her instructors, and has her academic credits deducted to negative numbers, yet refuses to give up. Are you that witch?”
“Uh… your sister must have the wrong person. This isn’t me, children.”
Charlotte gave an awkward laugh. Then, she stared intently at Alice, looking serious.
“So, what is this tricky matter of yours?”
Alice didn’t answer Charlotte’s question directly. Instead, she turned and walked toward the large crater not far away, gesturing for Charlotte to follow.
“You should know what this place is, right?”
Charlotte nodded slightly.
“This is Boiling Springs Mountain. A thousand years ago, when the Demon King Kōse led a massive demon army across the Boundary Mountain Range and attacked the Rose Empire, it was here that they suffered a crushing defeat by the Rose Knight Order. The Demon King Kōse’s strongest subordinate, Black Dragon Emperor, the chief of the Black Dragon Clan, was also instantly slain by Shera here.”
These events were all recorded in the magic books. Charlotte naturally knew them very well.
“Of course, this is also the location of Mom Rhynes’s and Dad Roland’s second encounter. But that’s probably not the answer Alice wants to hear.”
‘Speaking of which, Dad Roland spent two or three years in the Holy Knights. Commander Alice might have heard of him.’
“That’s right. That deep crater that runs straight to the ground is the masterpiece of the witch Shera. But you probably don’t know that the witch Shera didn’t completely destroy the Black Dragon. A piece of its dragon bone was scattered in this forest. After absorbing magical power for nearly a thousand years, it finally grew into a massive evil dragon seventeen years ago and ran rampant here.”
Alice explained.
She was walking ahead and naturally couldn’t see the look of smug pride on Charlotte’s face behind her.
Charlotte also knew this much. After all, the person who defeated that massive evil dragon was her Dad Roland.
“Although the giant dragon was finally defeated by our Holy Knights, the dragon bone itself wasn’t successfully destroyed. If we continue to ignore it, another evil dragon will inevitably grow out of it and cause trouble. To prevent this, the witch Noelle personally came here seventeen years ago and placed a seal, severing the connection between the dragon bone and the surrounding ley lines. Unable to absorb magical power, the dragon bone naturally couldn’t cause any more trouble.”
This event was also recorded in The Adventures of the Mist Witch.
However, Charlotte still nodded along with a look of realization.
“Oh, I see. Is that so?”
“However, even though the witch Noelle placed the seal and successfully severed the connection between the dragon bone and the ley lines, it was only a matter of time before the seal started to loosen due to the erosion of time. The seal here is currently starting to loosen. Our mission this time is to reinforce the loosened seal.”
“…Uh, well…”
At this point, Charlotte gently interrupted Alice’s narration. “Sorry, I haven’t graduated from the Magic Academy yet. I haven’t learned the magic to reinforce a seal…”
Although Charlotte had studied magic from all the various schools, there were still many spells she didn’t know. It was perfectly normal for her not to understand the principles of sealing magic.
Just like with Repair Magic before, even though Charlotte had learned how to use the spell, she still couldn’t completely repair broken objects at times. She later realized that to perfectly repair a broken object, she not only needed to know the Repair Magic spell but also needed to understand the basic structure of the object.
If she didn’t understand how a wall was constructed, the repaired wall would be as fragile as paper and would shatter with a simple poke.
“No, the work of reinforcing the seal is handled by our specialized Barrier Masters. Witch-sama doesn’t need to worry about that.”
Besides witches, there were a few other people in this world who could use magic.
These people could only use one type of magic, but precisely because of this, they learned the corresponding magic very quickly, usually mastering it within three months.
The Barrier Masters Alice spoke of were undoubtedly those who specialized in using Barrier Magic.
“Huh? So you brought Barrier Masters with you? Then why did you need me to come?” Charlotte felt her role was less important than a vase and looked displeased.
“You’re here to test whether the repaired seal has any other flaws! After all, in terms of magical power perception, Witch-sama is definitely superior!”
“So, in the end, I’m just a smoke detector?”
