Chapter 145: Is it funny to work for a junior for free?

As if hearing a familiar scream from the distant horizon behind her, Charlotte turned to look back at Tsumuguri City, which she had already left far behind.

Tsumuguri City was built atop the massive Tsumuguri Mountain, appearing from the outside like a cake set upon a dining table.

Beyond the city lay a vast, flat plain—like a “superflat” world—where one couldn’t see the end of the horizon even from a high altitude.

“I thought I heard Elsa scream just now, screeching like Tom after getting his tail stepped on. Was it just my imagination? There’s no way Elsa would make a noise like that.”

Dismissing her doubts, Charlotte continued her flight and soon reached her destination, lowering her altitude and landing on the grass below.

“The traces left by the Ice Wolf Clan should be around here.”

After landing, Charlotte began scanning the area for signs.

Just then, a familiar call came from not far away.

“Senior! Senior! Senior Charlotte!”

Charlotte turned her head and saw Yuffie trotting toward her.

She was a beautiful girl with pink braided hair, wearing the same witch robe as Charlotte, though the decorations on her magic hat were slightly different.

Without a doubt, this witch was Charlotte’s junior, Yuffie, who had now advanced to the second year.

Once responsible for a very serious magic-draining incident, she had finally achieved enlightenment through Charlotte’s efforts and was now atoning for her past mistakes.

Yuffie reached Charlotte’s side.

“Senior, it really is you! I thought I misidentified you just now. I never expected to run into you here! This is wonderful!”

Yuffie immediately hugged Charlotte, pressing her small head into her chest as if cuddling a cute kitten.

Charlotte quickly struggled out of Yuffie’s embrace.

“Hey! What are you doing? Is this any way to treat your Senior?”

“Hehe, that’s just because I haven’t seen you for so long, meow!” Yuffie apologized with a playful smile, sticking her tongue out.

“Restrain yourself! I am your Senior!”

“Yes, meow! I understand, meow!”

“Speaking of which, Yuffie, why are you here?”

“Oh, I’m here for a commission!”

“Hmm? You accepted a commission to investigate the Ice Wolf Clan too?”

“The Ice Wolf Clan? What’s that? My commission isn’t for that.”

“Then what are you planning to do here?”

“I’m here to repair a landmark. A few days ago, someone added an extra stroke to the landmark here. The people in charge couldn’t deal with the addition, so they commissioned me to handle it.”

“Is that so? But there’s nothing around here. Where’s this landmark you’re supposed to repair?”

“Right under our feet, of course! Senior Charlotte, just fly up and look down, and you’ll see!”

Skeptical, Charlotte mounted her broomstick and flew up. As she ascended, the view of the ground unfolded below her like a scroll.

Aside from the meadow, there were several man-made paths. No, the upper right corner of a large character had been vandalized; the word “Great River” had been changed to “Dog River.”

“That trace…”

“That’s what I have to repair today. But the mark is too difficult to deal with; even I’m at a loss. I was about to give up, but then Senior arrived! If Senior gives me a hand, everything will be fine!”

“Hey, don’t treat your Senior as free labor!”

“I’ll treat Senior to a cup of sweet honey-water afterward! Your steps will be light as air after drinking it. Please help me just this once, Senior!”

“Honestly, I can’t do anything with you. Fine, let me see just how difficult this thing is.”

With that, Charlotte flew to the upper right corner of the “Great” path and landed next to the vandalized grass to examine it closely.

To her surprise, she discovered that the vandalized mark was exactly what she was looking for: a claw mark left by the Ice Wolf Clan.

It seemed a member of the Ice Wolf Clan had punched the ground here. The surface was deeply indented, and a layer of hard blue ice remained on the claw mark, refusing to melt even under the hot sun.

“Senior, well? Can this mark be repaired?” Yuffie asked softly, running to Charlotte’s side.

Charlotte, however, stared at the mark and fell into deep thought.

She had initially thought the claw marks left by the Ice Wolf Clan would be in some dark, hard-to-find corner. She hadn’t expected them to appear in such an obvious place.

‘Do the Ice Wolf Clan want people to know they’ve invaded the vicinity of Tsumuguri City?’

‘If all the witches were to come out for a massive investigation, wouldn’t they be completely exposed and quickly caught?’

‘Is the Ice Wolf Clan actually a bunch of idiots with an IQ of less than nine?’

‘Wait, “all the witches”…’

If word got out that the Ice Wolf Clan was lurking outside the city, the Starsea Magic Academy might indeed send a large number of witches to search. After all, without knowing the Ice Wolf Clan’s numbers, they wouldn’t dare send only one or two witches to their deaths.

But if things developed that way, Tsumuguri City would be left vulnerable.

‘Could that be the Ice Wolf Clan’s goal? To deliberately leave such an obvious mark outside the city to lure the witches out, so they can run rampant inside…’

‘Crap!’

Realizing Tsumuguri City was in imminent danger, Charlotte immediately mounted her broomstick and flew back toward the city.

“Eh? Senior! Why are you running away? What about my commission?”

Seeing Charlotte fly off without a word, Yuffie was stunned.

Charlotte didn’t waste time talking. She casually tossed a Molotov cocktail into the deep crater. Instantly, flames erupted, immediately melting the layers of blue ice.

Seeing the blue ice she had struggled with for ages being dealt with so casually by Charlotte, Yuffie’s eyes widened in shock.

“As expected of Senior Charlotte. With enough magical power, you really can do anything!”

After a brief moment of daze, Yuffie came to her senses and mounted her broomstick to chase after Charlotte.

“Wait, Senior! Don’t leave so soon! We haven’t seen each other in so long; let’s chat more !”
