Chapter 39: Magic isn’t omnipotent.

“By the way, is Xiaoxi alright?” After their little spat, Charlotte asked with some concern. “From the way she looked just now, my death seemed to have hit her quite hard.”

“To say something like that so casually, there’s probably no one else in the world who could do it besides you, brother. Speaking of which, how the hell do you know Xiaoxi? Did you secretly check my phone to investigate my social circle?”

“I don’t have a habit of checking other people’s phones and peeking at their private lives like Yukina does!” Charlotte immediately retorted, but she truly lacked any subtlety in her words, and soon enough, Yukina was pinching her cheeks again.

“What do you mean, ‘like me’? Which eye of yours saw me peeking at other people’s private lives?”

“Yukina, stop pinching! Your big brother’s pretty face is going to get fat from all this squeezing!”

“So, brother, how did you get to know my friend?” Yukina asked, folding her arms and staring at Charlotte with a look of disdain.

“Actually, when I first met the kid, I had no idea she was your friend!”

“Oh?”

“That was about fifteen years ago…”

“It was only about fifteen hours ago for me!”

Yukina subconsciously muttered a complaint. The next second, she saw Charlotte place a finger on her forehead, as if searching through her memory.

Two seconds later, Charlotte found the memory she was looking for, but just as she was about to raise her hand to play the memory back, Yukina quickly reached out and stopped her.

“Wait, brother! You don’t need to play that memory back for me!”

“Hmm? But didn’t you really want to know what happened between me and her?”

“Just give me the simple version. Don’t resort to a flashback whenever you don’t know what to do!”

After all, that was probably a memory shared only between Xiaoxi and her brother. If she watched every detail, wouldn’t she become the very person who liked to peek at other people’s private lives?

“The simple version? I understand. Xiaoxi and I met when we were working part-time at the same restaurant.”

“What? You were secretly working part-time behind my back, brother? When did you start? Was it last month? No wonder you came home so late every day! I thought you were secretly going to the internet cafe to play Star Rail!”

“I didn’t voluntarily want to work part-time! Mika made me do it!”

“Senior Aiba? How is Aiba involved in this?”

“Mika said a restaurant she knew was really short on staff. If I helped them out, she would lend me her entire collection of Jujutsu Kaisen! Naturally, I couldn’t refuse that duty!”

“That’s not ‘duty’ at all! I now know exactly why you got hit by the truck and sent to another world.”

“In any case, during the few days I went to help out, Xiaoxi also happened to be working a temporary job there. How should I put it… she looked a little frail and wasn’t very good at communicating with strange customers. She often messed things up, so I kindly helped her fix things. After that, we naturally exchanged contact information.”

“That sounds exactly like something Xiaoxi would do!” Hearing Charlotte’s account, Yukina leaned back on the bench, covering her forehead with her right hand. “Speaking of which, it’s been fifteen years, and you still remember all that in such detail?”

“The impression that kid left was certainly very strong!”

Yukina frowned, staring at her brother who had forgotten where their home was but clearly remembered other people’s affairs, and then sighed.

“I think Xiaoxi must be very sad right now. Her senior, whom she had just met, is suddenly gone.”

Charlotte could probably guess the reason for Xiaoxi’s emotional distress.

“Why don’t you just tell her that I won the revival tournament and came back? That might cheer her up.”

“Brother, do you think the matter of you returning from another world isn’t a big enough deal yet? How can you just casually blurt out something like that?”

If it were discovered that her brother was a witch who had crossed over from another world to the real one, it might attract the continuous attention of all research institutions and militaries around the world. They might even deploy large armies to capture her. A third world war revolving around her brother was not out of the question.

In that case, wouldn’t her cherished ordinary life with her brother completely vanish?

Although their current daily life was already far from ordinary.

“In short, I’ll tell Xiaoxi about you at a suitable time. Don’t you dare do anything rash, brother!”

“Ngh, alright, I’ll listen to you, Yukina.”

“Speaking of which, brother, can you go back to last night and remove the news about your car accident?”

“Why are you suddenly asking about that?”

“Don’t worry about it! Didn’t you say you’re the strongest witch, brother? You should be able to do something like that easily!”

“I’m very sorry, but your big brother can’t do that!”

“Huh?”

“The other world doesn’t have a convenient reversal magic like that. Even if there were a similar one, it could only go back a few hours, and you wouldn’t be able to interact with the world at that time.”

“Then can you at least delete the memory of that news from everyone who saw it last night? You should be able to do that, right?”

“Deleting memories is simple, but I don’t have the ability to read minds. How am I supposed to know who all watched the news last night? Am I supposed to go through each person’s memory one by one? That would be like searching for a tiny star core in the ocean—it’s incredibly difficult!”

“You can’t do this, and you can’t do that. Are you really the strongest witch from another world, brother?”

“Magic isn’t omnipotent! The things you’re talking about, like time reversal and mind-reading, are things that only superpowers can do! I don’t have any superpowers.”

“Superpowers?” Hearing that word, Yukina paused.

Come to think of it, a stranger approached her yesterday morning, talking about how she also had a “superpower” and asking her to join their organization.

She had thought the person was just a liar and ignored him.

After all, how could something so fantastical as superpowers exist in the real world?

Yet, now, a giant, fantastical person was sitting right beside her, staring at her with wide eyes.

Did things beyond reality truly exist in the real world?

“Yukina, what’s wrong?” Seeing Yukina suddenly freeze mid-sentence, Charlotte asked, confused.

“No, nothing.”

‘I must be overthinking things. How can the world be that coincidental?’

“In short, you can’t do anything, right, brother?”

“It’s not that I can’t do anything, it’s that the things you’re asking for are beyond all common sense. Magic cannot accomplish things that defy common sense.”

“No, magic itself defies common sense! Or is it that the common sense in your other world is completely different from ours? Well, since you can’t do it, brother, I guess we’ll just have to let it go.”

“Yukina, why did you suddenly ask about that? Is that news really that important?”

“Brother, do you really want Mom to know that you died in a car accident, reincarnated as a witch, and came back?”

“Ew! I’d rather not. Mom would look at me with a terrifying expression! She might even do many unethical things to me.”

“Then there you go! The reason you can live a carefree life with me in this world is because I helped keep this a secret! You should be grateful to me! By the way, after all that talking, have you finished editing the video yet, brother? I’m still waiting to watch it.”

“Alright, alright, I’ll edit it for you to watch right now!”
