“Hahaha, that’s because I was busy with things over here!”
“Mika scratched the back of her head sheepishly, but then she suddenly seemed to realize something was wrong. “Eh? Wait a minute, who did you say? Kanon-chan? She went on stage too?”
“Yeah, she took out six people in one go. Of course, if a certain senior hadn’t suddenly gone AWOL, she wouldn’t have had to take your place and steal the spotlight.”
“Charlotte’s combat prowess had been witnessed by everyone in the Kendo Club, so there was no point in trying to hide it anymore. Yukina had no choice but to truthfully describe what had happened during the match.”
“Wow, I didn’t expect her to be so capable. It looks like I should hand over my first-rank seat to her.”
“Aiba Senior, what kind of nonsense are you talking about? In terms of sword skill proficiency, you’re clearly the one solidly in first place! That girl is just slightly more agile; she doesn’t know the first thing about actual sword techniques. If she became the ace, our Kendo Club would be finished!”
“No, I wasn’t talking about Kanon-chan; I was talking about you, Yukina! To actually tie with the Clover Academy ace… it seems your strength has already surpassed mine. It’s only natural for me to step aside for a better talent!”
“Eh? Aiba Senior, don’t say such things! I’m still far from your level!”
“Before they knew it, the conversation had drifted ten thousand miles away.”
“Seemingly realizing they were off-topic, Mika brought it back to the matter at hand.”
“So, Yukina-chan, now that the match is over, why have you come to a place like this? It’s a good two kilometers from our school. You didn’t just wander here for a post-lunch stroll, did you?”
“Hearing Mika’s inquiry, Yukina hesitated for a moment before confessing her purpose.”
“Actually, for some reason, Kanon-chan suddenly ran off to this place. I came here to bring her back.”
“What? Kanon-chan is here too? But I didn’t see her anywhere nearby just now. Could she have been captured by this Esper organization?”
“Mhm… probably!” Yukina responded softly.
“Although Yukina thought such a thing was impossible—who was Charlotte, after all? She was the strongest witch who had crossed over from another world. How could she be kidnapped as easily as Tang Sanzang?”
“But looking at Sakurako Aya’s reaction earlier, she must have crossed paths with Charlotte. Otherwise, she wouldn’t have pulled out that cursed AI picture of Charlotte being put on a witch trial.”
‘God knows what Charlotte is doing! Is she even coming home tonight?’
“That’s quite bad! It looks like we have to rescue Kanon quickly. If we’re too late, something might happen to her, and then it’ll be truly irreversible.”
“Uh…” Seeing Mika suddenly look so tense, Yukina was slightly stunned. “Aiba Senior, is it really that serious?”
“I think the Esper organization must have seen Kanon’s outstanding performance in the match earlier and thought she had the potential to become an elite Esper. They probably captured her to force an awakening. Besides emotional triggers involving life and death, powers can also be awakened using drugs. I’m afraid that’s exactly what that organization plans to do to Kanon.”
“Hearing Mika’s explanation, Yukina immediately imagined a scene of Charlotte lying quietly on an operating table with countless needles approaching her, and she couldn’t help but shiver.”
“Even if Charlotte was an omnipotent witch from another world, if she was tainted by the poisons of the real world, her body might not be able to resist them.”
“No, that won’t do! I absolutely can’t let her become like that!”
“Then we have to act fast. Yukina, can you still stand up?”
“Yukina nodded gently and stood up.”
“I’m fine now, Aiba Senior.”
“Good. Then let’s keep moving forward.”
“And so, Yukina and Mika continued deeper into the basement of the abandoned factory.”
“Hearing the sound of the door opening again, Qin Shion instinctively turned her head toward the entrance. She saw Sakurako Aya standing there with her clothes in disarray and her hair a mess, looking quite pathetic. Clearly, she had suffered another crushing defeat, just like the national football team—never winning.”
“Hmm? Back so soon? Don’t tell me you lost again. And why are your clothes torn off? What on earth did you go through out there?”
“Uh…” Aya was too embarrassed to say she’d been beaten up again, so she could only change the subject. “It’s part of the plan, don’t worry about it!”
“Is that so?” Since Aya wasn’t being honest, Qin Shion didn’t feel the need to press her further. She turned back to the screen in front of her. “Then hurry up and sew your clothes. Stop wandering around the room with that giant pineapple bun hanging out!”
“Do you think I’m some kind of exhibitionist? I didn’t want to end up like this! It’s because that person didn’t know how to hold back!”
“Aya sat down on the sofa and used her power to open a drawer five steps away. A sewing kit flew out and landed precisely in her palm.”
“Under her precise control, several needles and threads worked in unison, quickly restitching her torn uniform. In an instant, it was back to its original tidy state.”
“She then tossed the sewing kit back into the drawer and used her power to close it. The movements were smooth and seamless.”
‘Esper powers really are incredibly useful.’
“After fixing her uniform, Aya’s gaze landed on Charlotte, who was snoring away on the opposite sofa.”
“By the way, how’s the investigation into this girl going? Did you figure out what her power is?”
“Unfortunately, my mind-reading can only pick up on what she’s actively thinking. She hasn’t thought about using her power once from the start, so I have no idea what she’s capable of.”
“Then isn’t your mind-reading completely useless!”
“It’s still better than your repeatedly defeated Gravity Manipulation.”
“Uh… don’t bring up sore subjects! This was a completely unexpected situation!”
“Well, although I couldn’t read her power, I did manage to pick up some of her past experiences.”
“Oh? What has she been through?”
“A grand adventure story, it seems.” Qin Shion replied absently while typing rapidly on her keyboard.
“This made Aya feel confused. What exactly was Shion busy with? Was there really that much work to handle right now?”
“So, what are you doing?”
“Oh, I’m inputting what I just read into an AI model. With a few tweaks, the AI can convert what I read into video content that everyone can see.”
“Whoa! You can do that? AI really is too useful!”
“Aya couldn’t help but exclaim in wonder.”
“After hitting Enter, Qin Shion took her hands off the keyboard and clapped.”
“Alright, mission accomplished!”
“That was fast! Let me see what kind of ridiculous things this girl has been through! Maybe there’s a clue to her power in there.”
“Aya leaned in next to Shion. With a light click of the mouse, a familiar silver-haired girl appeared on the screen.”
“The appearance and build were identical to the girl snoring on the sofa behind them, but she was wearing a black-and-white magic robe and a pointed magic hat on her head.”
“This left Aya utterly bewildered.”
“Hmm? Was this girl into cosplay before?”
